“I’ve progressed pretty quickly since joining David Wilson. I started as a labourer in 2000. Then I was promoted to Site Manager, and after this to Buyer (my first office based role). Now I’m a Quantity Surveyor and there’s still more I want to achieve.
"Right now there’s a real feeling that the business is getting bigger and bigger, busier and busier. As a Quantity Surveyor, you’re at the heart of it all. It’s great to be involved from the very beginning of a project, right up until when customers get the keys to their new home, and long after that too.
"I’d say the biggest challenges of this role is making sure every one of our site staff are given the support they need to work safely and economically – while getting the job done to deadlines. It’s quite the balancing act. That’s why I’m glad to be part of a close-knit team, made up of surveyors, buyers and a commercial manager. Working together’s second nature to us.
"If you’re going to get on here, you need to be prepared to put the work in. That means being a little flexible when it’s needed. You’re given responsibility – but a good deal of independence too, so it’s important that you’re self motivated. Make a good go of it, and you can progress as far as you want. As for me, I’m still learning new things even after two years in the role. My next ambition is to become a senior surveyor. It’s good to know that the company is totally behind you if you want to get on.”
